Is a medical placement abroad right for me?

If you want to learn more about health, medicine, and global healthcare issues, these are the internships for you. We have opportunities to suit a wide range of skills levels, whether you are just starting out, or looking to further your career and broaden your horizons.

If you’re thinking about applying for medical school or a healthcare qualification, these internships will help you build a strong CV and perform well in interviews.

While you gain medicine work experience abroad, you’ll be well supported by local experts as well as Projects Abroad staff. Many of our interns don’t have previous experience in their chosen field, so you can start at a level you’re comfortable with. There is also the opportunity to take up volunteering work in the community you’ll be based in, so you can give back while you learn.

If you’re already studying medicine at university, we offer Medical Electives. If you’re interested in a hands-on internship abroad but feel Medicine & Healthcare isn’t the right route for you, you may be interested in our Veterinary Medicine internships or Social Work internships. What will I gain from a medical internship abroad?

Our medical placements abroad give you skills that prepare you for your next stage of education and career. You’ll also get a unique experience that you can talk about at interviews.

Here are just some of the benefits that our previous interns talk about:

  • Soft skills like: teamwork, communication, leadership, resilience, organising, planning, and time management
  • Experience from diseases and challenges you might not face in your home country
  • More in-depth work experience that you might get in your home country
  • The ability to work and empathise with people of different cultures and backgrounds, helping to develop a ‘global mindset’.
  • Confidence from pushing past your comfort zone

All of the above will enhance your CV, UCAS applications, and your personal development.

Why does this internship matter?

Gaining medicine work experience abroad will bring you closer to a future working in your chosen field. We’re proud to support future talent who will bring vital skills to communities in need.

How are Projects Abroad’s Medicine & Healthcare internships different?

At Projects Abroad, our first aim is to benefit the communities we work in. You can be assured that your internship is ethical, well supported, and part of a better future. Here’s just a few elements of our work that set it apart from other internship programmes:

Recording our work in a secure database

We created a Global Impact Database so we can track the positive impact our projects have. This is a secure and anonymous database that we use to identify specific areas of need. It allows us to use data to shape medical outreaches and health awareness programmes. We can also monitor individuals we see often, report our results, and collect data for research. All of this work is guided by our Management Plans.

Real work with trained professionals

On our internships, you’ll work alongside real healthcare professionals. You can observe them in their everyday work, ask questions and hear more about their experiences. You’re likely to get more insights into the frontline of medical care than in your home country.

A tailored approach

We are often able to tailor your internship to your interests. You can work in more than one department or focus on one particular area, or experience outreach work in the local community.

Interns learn how to suture during a workshop as part of a medical internship abroad.

Our Medicine & Healthcare policy

We take the safety of our volunteers, interns, and the people they work with very seriously. That’s why we’ve put in place a comprehensive Medical Ethics Policy.
