Based in Cape Town, the Care & Community Short-term Special project gives you the opportunity to work with children from disadvantaged communities in one of the local townships. You will learn about South Africa's culture as you explore and get to know the rainbow nation.
Volunteers work at day care centres. You will help young children with basic care and promote early childhood development, including running educational games focusing on literacy levels.
During your placement you will also get involved with various practical work like helping to run a soup kitchen scheme for a local community and general repair work at a day care centre such as painting, cleaning and renovation work.
Volunteers on this project in South Africa will live with some of the other Short-term Special volunteers in a host family.
You will also have time to relax and enjoy the stunning scenery that Cape Town and the surrounding area has to offer; whether you view the city from the top of Table Mountain, visit the penguins at Boulders Beach or explore some of the legendary Garden Route, these two weeks will be one of the best fortnights of your life!
If you choose to take part in the 4 week option your activities at your placement will remain the same but you will have more time to make more of an impact in the work being done around the Care Management Plan, notably Early Childhood Development. You'll also have the opportunity to visit Robben Island, do a Peninsula Tour, a Township Tour and spend time at a local market.
This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
