Building in Tanzania

- Accommodation: Host family or guest house
- Age Requirements: 15-18 years old
As a Building High School Special volunteer in Tanzania, you will build a new nursery school for children in a disadvantaged Maasai Village located near Arusha. This is extremely important for the community, as other nursery schools are far away and the children need a safe space to learn and grow. This will help encourage them to stay in school.
During your project, you will help build clean and safe toilets and classrooms at the new nursery school and other schools in the community. You will also assist with the renovation of our Maasai School, built by our volunteers. Projects Abroad runs and funds this school.
All of our Building volunteers work alongside a local construction worker. He will teach you everything you need to know, from building methods to using locally sourced building materials. The activities you get involved with at our building sites include:
- Digging foundations
- Mixing cement
- Building walls
- Constructing roofs
- Painting and decorating
You will also do something a little different and build a chicken coop for the nursery school. Keeping chickens will help provide food and a source of income for the children and staff there.
While you are in Tanzania, you will experience daily life in a traditional African city while living in Arusha. You will stay either with a local host family or at a guesthouse. When you aren’t learning different drumming techniques or traditional dancing, you will spend your time exploring the beautiful landscape in Tanzania. This country has a rich history and there is a lot to see and do. As you walk through the city, you will see the colonial influence on architecture and markets, contrasted with older tribal traditions. A memorable event will certainly be your visit to one of the many national parks, where you will see breath-taking scenery and African wildlife.
