Assist teachers with English lessons that promote reading, writing, and speaking skills
Your focus will be to support the education of kindergarten children under the guidance of local teachers. Many government-run schools lack skills and resources. This includes teachers with good English levels. Your goal would be to help improve the English literacy levels of the kids. You can do this by singing songs with them, basic writing exercises, and simple word associations.
Encourage early childhood development through fun, educational games and activities
You’ll keep kids engaged and learning by playing fun games and educational activities that teach them basic learning principles. These can range from activities that build good communication in English, to number puzzles that help familiarise them with basic maths. Your job doing volunteer work with children in India is basically to help make learning fun.
Create educational resources for learning
You’ll spend between one and two hours a day creating educational resources with other volunteers and the local team. Here, you’ll get to share ideas with one another as you create interactive activities or fun games. Things like flashcards, small posters, or the alphabet will all be useful. These can even be used by the teachers well after you’ve left.
Where will I work in India?
You’ll be staying in Fort Kochi, a seaside region in the state of Kerala. A city bursting with heritage and traveller influence alike. Hundreds of years ago the port was used by many merchants and voyagers, each imparting some of their culture into the ever-growing region.
Your working day will be spent at a local kindergarten where you’ll assist the teachers and caregivers. The conditions of the placement are basic but you’ll have everything you need to assist with classes and plan activities.
In your free time, you can explore the city. It hosts outstanding religious museums, daily cultural performances, and the famed Chinese fishing nets along the coast. All eager to be found by an enthusiastic adventurer. The state has a host of public transport networks so you’ll have no trouble travelling around.
Once you’re done exploring, you can still tantalise your tastebuds. You’ll find a wide variety of local eateries to try. You can send your tongue on an adventure of its own. The weather is generally hot, at around 28℃. It can stay relatively hot at night time as well, so make sure you bring your shorts and swimming costume.
A typical day volunteering with children in India
Once you wake up in the morning, you’ll grab breakfast with the other volunteers and get ready for the day ahead.
Arranged transport will take you to your first placement where you’ll spend two hours, from 10 am to 12 pm, assisting teachers with their classes. This will be at a kindergarten, so expect lots of bubbly chatter and high energy levels.
You’ll break at 12pm and can get to know the other volunteers during this time. After your break, you’ll get back in the class, which will be from 2 pm to 3:30 pm. You’ll get to run fun English lessons and educational activities during this time. After classes, you’ll head back to the office with local staff and volunteers to plan fun activities for the next day.
Once that’s down, it’ll be time to hit the town! Or you could stay home, but we recommend exploring and discovering more about what makes Fort Kochi special. The local staff is happy to share ideas of what you can get up to!
We set out the aims and objectives of our projects in documents called Management Plans. We use them to properly plan the work you’ll do. They also help us measure and evaluate our achievements and impact each year.
Ultimately, our Management Plans help us make our projects better. This in turn means you get to be part of something that makes a real impact where it’s needed. Read more about our Management Plans.
Measuring our impact
Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.
Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.

Leisure activities and free time
Explore India, a country rich in heritage and vibrant in culture.
India has so much to offer, from its beautiful coastal shores and meditative forests to its spicy delicacies and colourful markets. You'll be in awe by the organised chaos of transport and people, and amazed by local landmarks and temples that stand tall above the city.
In Kerala, you can experience all this and more. It's famous as one of India's most serene states coupled with the soothing flow of the Backwater canal system that runs through communities.
When you aren't exploring the surrounding areas, you can find your inner zen in a country known for its yoga practice. Improve your yoga technique or start from scratch. No matter your skill level, you'll take away great tips and techniques.
Our local staff will also facilitate regular social activities so that you can get to know volunteers and interns from other projects too. This is a great way to make an international group of friends who you can travel with during your trip.
Safety and staff support
Your safety and security is our prime concern. We have many procedures and systems to ensure you have the support you need to enjoy your trip with peace of mind. Our Projects Abroad staff are available 24 hours a day to help, and will be on-hand to make sure you settle in well at your accommodation and placement.
