Travel to Asia and team up with people from around the world to do public health work in the Philippines with a group. Together, you'll work alongside healthcare professionals, and learn directly from them. They'll teach you how to do practical health checks. You'll also help raise awareness about disease.
In the Philippines, non-communicable diseases like diabetes and heart disease are a leading cause of death. With your help, we’re able to go into communities where healthcare services are limited. Medical professionals use the data you collect at outreaches to diagnose and treat patients, or refer them for treatment. Through awareness work, you’ll focus on encouraging people to make healthy lifestyle choices, and prevent diseases like diabetes.
You’ll live and work with your group in San Remigio, and stay with a local host family. When you’re not working, we’ve organised social and cultural events for you to enjoy, along with a weekend sightseeing trip. Our Projects Abroad staff will be there to support you constantly.
When you apply you only pay 19,500 INR or $295, which comes off the total price.

Is a Public Health internship in the Philippines for groups right for me?
This project is the perfect fit for you if you want to team up with other people to provide healthcare services in disadvantaged communities in Asia. It’s one of our Team Trips, where we run a project on fixed dates so individuals from around the world can come together to form a group.
You’ll work in areas where access to basic medical care is limited, and people often go without much-needed treatment. Together, you and your group will become part of our ongoing efforts to improve well-being in the Philippines.
You don’t have to worry about organising anything in in the Philippines, as you’ll follow an itinerary. From the moment you arrive at the airport, everything is planned for you. You and your group will have a full schedule of volunteer work, cultural and social activities, and a weekend trip.
You don’t need previous experience or qualifications to join. All of your practical work is supervised, and we’ll teach you everything you need to know before you participate in an outreach.
This is a great way to actively make a difference, and gain experience for your CV at the same time. You’ll be helping people through medicine, and this experience will demonstrate your commitment to healthcare. It’s especially useful if you’re interested in pursuing a career in the medical field. It will also help you stand out in applications, and give you interesting points to talk about in interviews and essays.
Our Public Health Team Trip in the Philippines runs over fixed dates at different times of the year. You can choose the dates that best fit your schedule.
What will I be doing?
You’ll do health checks under the supervision of medical and public health professionals, and raise awareness of the importance of healthy living. Here are some of the tasks you can expect to do during your placement:
- Conduct health screenings on patients so that doctors can diagnose and treat them
- Raise awareness of the importance of healthy living in local communities
- Experience life in the Philippines with a group of people from around the world
Your work will focus on the following main tasks:
Participate in medical outreaches
A big part of your internship is centered around doing health checks in local communities. You’ll assist with measuring blood pressure, blood sugar, and the weight of patients. You may also get the chance to assist with dental work and/or the distribution of medication. Doctors and nurses will use the information you gather to diagnose and treat patients, or refer them for further treatment.
Your group will have a big impact at these outreaches. The more interns we have on board, the more patients we can see and help at each outreach.
Work on health awareness promotion
During home visits in local communities, you’ll talk to families about making healthy lifestyle choices. We do this in homes, because being in a familiar setting helps them feel more comfortable with receiving basic medical advice.
Your team will also get the opportunity to run workshops on health-related topics in various communities. Topics you could cover include:
- Dangers of smoking and alcohol abuse
- Dental care
- Nutrition and healthy lifestyle
- Hypertension and diabetes
- First aid
Explore and experience the Philippines
When your public health work is done for the day, we have various social and cultural activities for your group to enjoy in the evenings. You’ll also learn a lot about the culture and traditions by staying with a local host family. Over the weekend, we’ll take you on a trip to Bantayan Island. Throughout it all, Projects Abroad staff members will accompany you for guidance and support.
Where will I be working?
Our Public Health placements in the Philippines for groups are at a rural health unit in San Remigio. You’ll also work in hospitals and within rural villages and communities.
Located in Cebu in the Philippines, San Remigio is a great place for diving, and is also home to several beach resorts and gorgeous public beaches. In the evenings and over the weekend, we have plenty for your group to see and do, accompanied by our staff as always.
You will stay with a host family in Bogo City, which is only 12 km from San Remigio.
What are the aims and impact of this project?
The main aim of this project is to bring like-minded people together to improve the overall health of disadvantaged communities.
Our Public Health work in the Philippines focuses on a healthy lifestyle programme, which aims to reduce the occurence of non-communicable diseases. These are diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. According to the Department of Health in the Philippines, these diseases account for seven out of the ten leading causes of death. Poor nutrition, smoking, drug and alcohol abuse also contribute to the the prevalence of non-communicable diseases.
As a Public Health intern, you can help address these issues by helping us conduct house-to-house surveys and health checks. You’ll also be able to use this time to educate families on healthy lifestyle choices. By being part of a team, you’ll be able to help us reach an even greater number of people in the short time you’re in the Philippines.
What’s more, you’ll also be gaining invaluable professional experience. We want to equip you with the knowledge and practical skills to pursue a career in healthcare. You’ll have medical professionals with you during outreaches, giving you the chance to learn from them and ask questions.
Join our Public Health Team Trip in the Philippines and help support local communities through ongoing healthcare initiatives.
We set out the aims and objectives of our projects in documents called Management Plans. We use them to properly plan the work you’ll do. They also help us measure and evaluate our achievements and impact each year.
Ultimately, our Management Plans help us make our projects better. This in turn means you get to be part of something that makes a real impact where it’s needed. Read more about our Management Plans.
Measuring Our Impact
Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.
Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.
